Bridges of the Kelvin Walk

Address: South east corner of Kirklee Bridge, Kirklee Road

Information: Beginning at Kirklee Bridge and ending at Benalder Street Bridge this walk takes in the bridges over the Kelvin from Kirklee to Partick. The main emphasis is on surviving intact structures, but reference will be made to the remains of former bridges, and to the sites of bridges that have completely gone. The range of structures is surprising - excellent late 19th century masonry arches, cast-iron bridges, two important reinforced concrete structures and a selection of modest footbridges. The construction of the bridges will be related to the economic and social history of the area. A summary handout will be supplied. Led by Professor John Hume.
