The Back Garden Off Brechin Street G3 7HF

MAST Architects, 2011

Tucked in the heart of sandstone tenements, an urban garden is run by the community. Pop in to pick up top tips on growing fruit and vegetables, take part in hands on gardening, and watch a cooking demonstration.

Up a lane between residential blocks, expecting to find the usual city “back court”, dejected, empty washing lines and stowed bins; but behind Brechin Street you will find The Back Garden.

Set up by Annexe Communities in 2011 using a grant obtained from the Climate Challenge Fund.  The Back Garden was officially transferred to the G3 Growers the following year, a small committee from the community who oversee the smooth running of The Back Garden.

As far is as known, the site was once occupied by a “mews building” which later became a motor workshop and after that was demolished it became a local fly-tip.

Step into The Back Garden and you step out of the city.  These tenements make effective sound barriers and screens the garden from the worst of the traffic fumes.  All on the one level the gravel pathways are easy for you to get around, motorised wheelchairs seem to cope better than manual’s/prams and such.

Why not pop in and pick up some tips on growing fruit and vegetables for yourself.  Over the weekend you will be able to take part in hands on gardening/taking cuttings, composting & domestic waste workshop with “The Wise Group”, watch a cooking demonstration from our in garden nutritionist Nicola Becci, jazz up plant pots and cress head making especially for children of all ages; refreshments will also be available.

Part of the Childrens Programme: Dont despair if your little one(s) do not like getting their hands too dirty, they can easily be kept amused doing crafts; making a cress head or decorating a pot plant to take home while you enjoy gardening.

Discover Green Glasgow: You will be inspired to grow for yourself no matter how little space you have.  You will pick up Gardening, Composting and Cooking tips & you will be able to do some gardening should you want to .

Hosting a somewhereto_ event: Photography Exhibition in a poly tunnel! Daniel White will be presenting images from his collections Light and Space and Flores in the unusual location of a functioning growing space.
