Bridgeton Bus Garage, Glasgow Vintage Vehicle Trust

 76 Fordneuk Street Bridgeton G40 3AH

Glasgow Corporation, 1965

The last purpose-built Glasgow Corporation bus garage.  Now home to the Glasgow Vintage Vehicle Trust and its collection of vintage buses and commercial vehicles.  View vehicles and transport-related artefacts.  This year celebrates the garages 50th birthday!

Bridgeton Bus Garage was built for Glasgow Corporation Transport and opened in 1965.  It’s a good example of industrial architecture from that era in that its appearance is functional rather than decorative. The garage operated buses till 1976 (only 11 years).  It was later used as a local authority internal transport depot before being leased by Glasgow City Council to the Glasgow Vintage Vehicle Trust in 2003.

The garage is now well established as a heritage centre for buses and commercial vehicles.  Much of the Trust’s collection will be on display with over 100 exhibits to see.  You will see examples of vehicles ranging from hulks rescued from scrap yards and awaiting attention to fully restored and active examples.  The vehicles we have revive memories of years gone by with a wide variety of makes, models and liveries long since disappeared from our streets.

At the moment, Bridgeton Bus Garage is not generally open to the public.  During Doors Open Weekend, guided tours will give visitors a “behind the scenes” look at the building and its facilities.  The tours will also explain what it was like when it was a working bus garage as well as explore the restoration activities currently in progress.  This includes the Trust’s “Back on the Road” project which gives those with drug or alcohol addiction problems skills and work experience to prepare them for future employment.  Finally, we will have a variety of smaller transport-related artefacts from our archives on display such as destination boxes from trams and old uniforms.

As the garage enjoys its 50th birthday, we invite you to celebrate the building with us and the fact that it continues to have a role related to buses in our city, albeit vintage ones, and so preserving a vital part of our heritage.

Part of the Childrens Programme: There will be a quiz for older kids and colouring in for younger kids.

Discover Glasgows Industrial Heritage: You will see within the vehicle collection at Bridgeton Bus Garage the evolution of technical development of passenger transport through the 20th century as well as see a building vital to maintaining a functioning transport network.

Discover Green Glasgow: The GVVT celebrates bus and coach travel.  These are seen as key ways in the battle to reduce emissions.  Stricter limits are set on emissions from modern buses and coaches.  Also much is done today to try and encourage car users to leave their cars at home and use bus and coach services instead.  Less cars on the road mean less emissions from them.  Thus, buses and coaches help support a green agenda.
