Mackintosh Queens Cross Church
870 Garscube Road G20 7EL
Charles Rennie Mackintosh, 1897-9
Category A Listed
Mackintosh’s only church design to be built and now the headquarters of the Mackintosh Society and a budding events venue. Explore this hidden architectural gem with stained glass, wood and stone carvings, and dramatic uses of light and space.
The building was commissioned in 1896 and the simplicity of the design (compared with much Victorian architecture of the day) is inspiring. Mackintosh Queen’s Cross looks very much as it would have done in Mackintosh’s time – the magnificent stained glass blue heart window and exceptional relief carving on wood and stone are highlights of the interior, where light and space are used to dramatic effect. This atmospheric building full of intriguing design detail is well worth exploring and discovering.
