William Leiper, Glasgows other Architect
Talk
NEW
Leiper Gallery 117 West George Street Glasgow G2 1QR
Leiper is less well known than Mackintosh and Thomson but much more prolific, from Venice to Glasgow via churches and houses to a Russian ship and a Gothic lighthouse. Learn about his life and work in one of his buildings.
William Leiper is one of the most interesting, but relatively unknown, architects of the golden period of the expansion of the city of Glasgow in the late Nineteenth Century. Next May will see the centenary of his death in Helensburgh at the age of 77 and to commemorate him the Leiper Gallery is promoting an exhibition of his life and work as part of Festival 2016, Scotlands year of design and architecture.
Research is ongoing into this rather enigmatic figure, who was an accomplished painter and studied in Paris during a long career break from 1878, thereafter being elected a member of the Royal Scottish Academy. This talk gives a foretaste of what will be presented in more detail next year, with information about the public buildings and churches he designed as well as a selection of his private houses throughout Scotland.
