Charles Rennie Mackintosh, 1903

Category A Listed

Hear about Mackintoshs collaboration with Kate Cranston in making the Willow Tea Rooms, one of the few buildings designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh still being used today for its original purpose. Enjoy our exhibition telling this story, see the original job books and the names of the contractors involved (check out if any of your relatives were involved!).  Enjoy the amazing pictures of how the Tea Rooms looked in the early 1900s.  Marvel at the original features still in place today, including the Room De Luxe doors, windows and mirrors.

For our younger visitors, the morning sessions will bring the story of Mackintosh to life, their own activity sheet will help them find out about the Tea Rooms, and they will be drawing their favourite feature.  All entries will be put into a competition and the winner will be invited to come along to the Tea Room with two of their favourite grown-ups to enjoy afternoon tea.

Children are also welcome at the afternoon session which will go into more detail on the story of how the Willow Tea Rooms came to be, how Kate Cranston was ahead of her time in developing her business and how it fitted into the Glasgow art scene.

Part of the Childrens Programme: The morning sessions are for children aged 5 11 lots of the children hear about Mackintosh as part of the School timetable, this is your opportunity to learn on the job.
