Visit Govan Old Church and discover the unique collection of early medieval stones carved in the 9th – 11th centuries to commemorate the power of those who ruled the Kingdom of Strathclyde.
Explore the 31 monuments dating from this period which include beautifully carved crosses and cross shafts, and 5 magnificent hogback stones. Enjoy the intricate interlace carving and warrior figures on the collection’s outstanding piece – the Govan Sarcophagus, the only one of its kind carved from solid stone from pre-Norman, northern Britain.
Sunday 20th September: Govan Old church is pleased to announce that between 2pm and 4pm there will be performances from the Scottish Plainsong Choir singing Gregorian Chant and plainchant in celebration of Celtic Saints.
Often overlooked, the stained glass windows of Govan Parish Church feauture some of the finest workshops of the late-Victorian period. They are unusual in that one person, Dr. John Macleod (Minister of Govan Parish Church 1875-98) determined the choice of subjects and the stained glass studios that made them. Consequently the windows relate to each other in both subject and style.
