Govan Waterfront Walk

Walking Tour

Outside Govan Subway station, 737 Govan Road, G51 2YJ

The tour will take in Water Row, the edge of the Showpeoples yard, Harland Way alongside the river and culminating at the derelict historic graving docks (dry docks). Hear about proposals to bring the dry docks back to life.

Led by The Clyde Docks Preservation Initiative, the tour will take in Water Row, the edge of the Showpeoples yard, Harland Way alongside the river (where the Harland and Wolff shipyard was once located) and culminating at the derelict historic graving docks (dry docks) below Govan Rd. The dry docks, constructed from hand carved granite, are a category A listed site. They were the largest in Britain when they were built and are now the only remaining dock complex on the upper Clyde. The site has been derelict since closing in 1988. Hear about current proposals to bring the dry docks back to life and make suggestions of your own.

The tour will be an informal and open conversational format rather than a walking lecture, with a number of guides presenting different explanations at each stage of the route. For safety and access reasons we will be unable to explore the graving docks as part of the tour however there is an excellent view of them from the adjoining streets.

Discover Glasgows Industrial Heritage: An understanding of what Glasgows industrial waterfront has lost and what can still be saved.
